Youth Ministry

I wanted to take the opportunity to introduce myself to you. My name is Mike Sanders, and I am looking forward to working with students in grades 6–12 as the Youth Director at Calvary Baptist Church. I have spent a lot of my adult life working with young people in various churches, and also in my day job as a hockey goaltending instructor. As with other times in my life, I truly feel as though God has called me back to youth ministry. Since becoming a Christian, youth ministry has always been my passion; this is a part of the church that I feel is easy to connect with, and where I can have the greatest impact as a follower of Christ.

Youth culture is a dynamic, ever-changing world that can sometimes be difficult to navigate and engage with. As a youth leader, it has long been my goal to reach the youth at their level; to walk with them, to support them through their various transitions of faith and life. As I have experienced the grace of God in my life, it is my desire to see that same grace experienced by our students. Youth are the future of the world, and the future leaders of Christ's church, and the importance of that is not lost on me. I want our kids to come out of our ministry with a solid faith that can stand the tests of this world. Because of this, it will be my joy as leader to make sure we are not just teaching our youth, but discipling them in the faith. We are not just filling their heads with knowledge, we are trying to fill their hearts with God's truth.

As a leader, I recognize the importance of God's headship in the ministry. We accomplish nothing of value without Him at the forefront. With that in mind, my vision for youth ministry has a few key features:

  1. A core group of youth who are actively participating in weekly activities, who can take ownership of the youth group to invite their friends, and who are being discipled by the leaders.
  2. A great group of leaders who are passionate about youth, and who are actively walking in their faith with Christ.
  3. An open door of communication with parents, as the process of discipleship is not just for youth leaders alone, but also for parents to participate in.

It’s a privilege to partner together in this ministry, and I would ask for your prayers and your support as we, together, point our students to Jesus. As always, I am available to connect with you at any time. Please feel free to email me or call me if you have any questions.
