As I write this I’m sitting on a pool deck that must be at least 100º. I’m watching my middle daughter swim. This isn’t just an easy leisurely swim. This is ninety minutes of intense laps of different sets with no breaks – 3.75 km to be exact. This is one part of her triathlon training in a week.
What motivates people to invest so much time and effort into something? I think we invest time into what matters to us and who matters to us. We want these activities or relationships or events in our lives to be better. I’m not suggesting that we always get things perfect, but rather we can build on something, refine something, see something in a new way. Perhaps we can discover something about ourselves that we didn’t know, like a strength or skill we didn’t see. It could be something we need to work on or allow to change.
Aren’t you thankful that God allows us time to grow and learn as believers? He doesn’t rush us or give up on us when we fall short. Similar to an athlete who invests so much time to get better, we can also challenge ourselves in areas of our faith.
Prayer is an area we have been looking at in Sunday School. Our grades 1-5 have a sharing time, and we have been building a prayer wall with our concerns and requests. Thanks to one of our teachers, we also have a journal where we carefully watch for answered prayer as well. This has been a great opportunity to demonstrate to the children that God does care for them and the details of their lives. It also shows the importance of prayer in our daily walk and that it does require time, commitment and practice.
What a great way to help build into their faith!
And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him ~ Colossians 3:17
